Using this service
What School District Am I In provides an informational district lookup, interactive boundary map, and
nearby-public-school view based on public U.S. Census Bureau and National Center for Education Statistics
data. Use the result as a starting point and contact the local district before making enrollment, housing,
or financial decisions.
No school-assignment promise
A district boundary is not an individual school attendance zone, and a nearby-school list is not an
assignment list. We do not promise that a child is eligible for, or assigned to, any particular school.
Boundaries, school locations, grade structures, and local rules may change after the displayed data date.
Availability, external links, and acceptable use
The service is provided as available and may be interrupted by upstream data services. Optional Google
Maps and directions links open a third-party service; its place details, reviews, travel estimates, and
navigation are not enrollment determinations. Do not automate, overload, reverse engineer, or misuse the
service. You remain responsible for confirming important facts with the appropriate public agency.
Public data, maps, and endorsement
District information is derived from public Census geography, public-school locations and attributes are
derived from NCES EDGE/Common Core of Data, and the street basemap is provided by OpenStreetMap
contributors. Use of those sources does not imply endorsement of this site, its products, or its
conclusions by the Census Bureau, NCES, OpenStreetMap Foundation, or individual contributors.

The short version
Your submitted address or exact device coordinates are sent to our same-origin Worker. The Worker queries
the U.S. Census Bureau for the district and sends the resulting point—not the address text—to NCES to find
nearby public-school locations. We do not place the address or lookup coordinates in the page URL, save
them to browser storage, include them in shared result text, or send them to product analytics.
Approximate starting result
If you open the home page without submitting an address, Cloudflare may provide the connecting IP to
IPBot so we can estimate a city-level location and show a starting district result. This functional request
does not require browser location permission, and we never display the raw IP. VPNs and internet routing can
make this estimate several miles away. The IP and approximate coordinates are not placed in the URL, browser
storage, shared text, or product analytics.
Precise device location
We ask the browser for precise location only after you select “Use precise location.” The coordinates are
sent through our Worker to Census for the district lookup and to NCES for nearby public-school locations;
the browser-reported accuracy stays only in this page’s memory and is not sent with either request or
saved. A device’s current location is not necessarily your home address, so a full home address remains the
most reliable district check.
Interactive street map
The browser requests visible street-map tiles directly from OpenStreetMap’s standard tile service. Those
tile URLs identify the map area and zoom level being viewed, and OpenStreetMap receives ordinary network
request metadata plus this site’s origin as the referrer. We do not put the submitted address text or exact
lookup coordinates into an OpenStreetMap request. Panning or zooming changes which tiles are requested.
Optional Google Maps links
Each school card may offer “Google Maps” and “Directions” links. Those URLs contain the school’s public
name and public NCES address so Google can identify the destination. They do not contain your submitted
home address, checked coordinates, raw IP address, Census matched address, or an origin location. The
directions link leaves the origin blank, so Google Maps may use its own current-location handling or ask
you to enter a starting point after you open it. These links use a no-referrer policy and open only after
you choose them.
Operational data
We may count broad, non-identifying service events such as lookup success, error category, device class,
coarse completion time, or whether a Google Maps or directions action was selected. These events contain
no address, coordinates, matched address, school name, school address, NCES ID, district name, GEOID,
account identifier, cookie, or fingerprint. Analytics events are not sent when Global Privacy Control or
Do Not Track is enabled.
Saved districts
If you choose “Save district,” district facts—not the searched address—are stored in this browser. You can
remove that browser data using your browser’s site-data controls. The site does not create an account or
set a tracking cookie.
Service providers
Cloudflare serves the site and API, IPBot supplies the optional coarse network-location estimate, the U.S.
Census Bureau supplies geocoding and district geography, NCES supplies nearby public-school locations and
attributes, and OpenStreetMap supplies browser-requested street-map tiles. Google Maps is contacted only
after you choose one of its school links and receives the public school destination in that URL. Requests
may be processed under those providers’ operational policies; we intentionally minimize the data our
application records.
